The Student Association of the Faculty of Education and Psychology at the Universidade Católica Portuguesa (AE FEP-UCP) has entered a new chapter under the leadership of Beatriz Valongo, a Psychology undergraduate who steps into the presidency with a clear vision: to strengthen closeness, promote active participation, and ensure that every student truly feels represented.
In this interview, Beatriz shares the priorities for her term, the spirit she wants to instil in AE FEP-UCP, and the initiatives she hopes to develop throughout the year.
What motivated you to take on the presidency of AE FEP-UCP?
Above all, it was the desire to serve and give back to the faculty everything it has given me. I have always felt that the Student Association could be more than a representative body: it can be a space for listening, welcoming, and building together. The presidency came as a challenge born from a dream, but also from a deep sense of responsibility. I believed I could contribute with a vision that is close, human, and inclusive, placing students truly at the centre of every decision.
What are the main priorities for this term?
Our priorities include strengthening our connection with students, improving communication between the Association and the academic community, and creating initiatives that respond to real needs – academic, personal, and social. We also aim to build partnerships, energise academic life locally and internationally, and ensure that everyone feels represented, heard, and supported throughout their journey.
“The guiding principle of this term is closeness with purpose”
What is the guiding principle of this term?
Closeness with purpose. We want an Association that is present, accessible, and empathetic – one that exists in students’ daily lives, not just at formal moments. An Association that builds with students, not just for students.
What are the main challenges AE FEP-UCP faces?
One of the biggest challenges is overcoming the sense of distance that students sometimes feel towards representative structures, as well as encouraging them to step out and explore the opportunities we offer, such as training sessions and workshops. Another challenge is responding to a diverse community with very different needs in a demanding academic context. In addition, it is essential to ensure sustainability, continuity, and innovation without losing the Association’s identity.
What opportunities exist to improve students’ academic experience?
There are many opportunities, particularly in creating spaces for dialogue, support, and active participation, such as online study sessions. From academic and wellbeing initiatives to cultural, training, and integration events, there is room to make the university experience more complete, balanced, and enriching. We believe that listening to students is the first step in identifying these opportunities.
“AE FEP-UCP exists to be a resource, a support, and an active voice”
How can students benefit from AE FEP-UCP?
Through the representation of their interests, academic support, event organisation, and the creation of opportunities for participation, training, and personal growth. The Association exists to be a resource, a support, and an active voice on behalf of students.
How does AE FEP-UCP support new students at the faculty?
AE FEP-UCP plays a key role in welcoming new students, promoting activities that provide guidance and support. We want everyone who joins the Faculty of Education and Psychology to immediately feel part of the community, with access to clear information, close support, and a safe environment where they can grow academically and personally.
“This Student Association is yours: take part, share ideas, dream with us”
What message would you like to leave for FEP-UCP students?
I want to tell you that this Association is yours. We are here to listen, represent, and support you. Do not hesitate to take part, make suggestions, offer constructive criticism, and dream with us. The faculty is built every day by the people who believe in it. Together, we can make this term a truly collective achievement.
