João Guerra has a degree in Medicine from the University of Coimbra (1992–1998).

He is a Senior Consultant in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Director of the Adolescent Psychiatry Department, at the Hospital de Magalhães Lemos, ULS de Santo António.

His training included the Postgraduate Diploma in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy for Children and Adolescents, the Postgraduate Diploma in Cognitive Narrative Psychotherapy, the Advanced Training in Family Therapy and Systemic Intervention, and the Training in the "Mais família, Mais jovem" Programme. He is Certified Director of Moreno Psychodrama, certified in the "Incredible Years Parent Programme" and "Incredible Babies Programme", certified in the Early Start Denver Model (ESDM), and certified in the PEERS® Program for the Education and Enrichment of Relational Skills.

He has been since 2021 an Invited Lecturer in Psychiatry, in the Integrated Master's Degree in Medicine, at the Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas Abel Salazar (ICBAS), University of Porto. Currently, he is also an Invited Lecturer in Psychopharmacology, in the Master's Degree in Psychology at the Faculty of Education and Psychology, Universidade Católica Portuguesa.
 
He is a member of the Portuguese Association of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, of the Portuguese Society of Family Therapy, of the Portuguese Society of Psychodrama, and of the Portuguese Society for Attention Deficit Disorders.
