Raquel Matos, Director of the Faculty of Education and Psychology at the Universidade Católica Portuguesa (FEP-UCP), has been invited to give a Distinguished Lecture in Psychology at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (United States).

The Distinguished Lecture will take place on 30 April 2024, from 4pm to 5.30pm, at the University of Maryland, and will be entitled: “A 50 years ‘celebration’: Examining 5 decades of Mass Incarceration and Gender Studies.”

The FEP Director and Researcher at the Research Centre for Human Development  (CEDH), will talk about the global increase in the prison population and gender and crime studies between 1973 and 2023.  Raquel Matos will discuss the advances and setbacks in prison policies and the response to criticisms from feminist perspectives in criminology over the last 50 years.

"The beginning of 2023 marked half a century of research into gender, violence and social control, themes that have been central to my academic career. Coincidentally, I celebrated my 50th birthday last year, so in this lecture I propose to reflect on the evolution of my field of study throughout my lifetime," states the FEP director.
