There is a growing number of students who do not wish to learn what is prescribed and who are unwilling to assume the role of a student. This is undoubtedly a factor contributing to indiscipline and bullying.
Following a historic decline in early school dropout rates, Portugal has now recorded an increase in this indicator, suggesting that more students are considering leaving secondary education without completing it.
In this brief note, we highlight two issues that are generally absent from public debate: hidden school dropout and the disengagement of an indeterminate, yet undoubtedly significant, number of students who do not wish to learn much of what is prescribed in official curricula.
