José Matias Alves: "Thousands of students without teachers: Emergency measures"

The media reports that at the end of the second term, there were 30,000 pupils without a teacher in at least one subject. And next year, there will be around 110,000 in the same situation, according to a study. Moreover, the list of subjects with a shortage of teachers is growing: Portuguese, Mathematics, Biology and Geology, Physics and Chemistry, History, Geography, English, Philosophy, and Computer Science.

I will not make the story of the blame game here: that it was Maria de Lurdes, Crato, Justino, and Tiago Brandão Rodrigues. There is certainly a share of responsibility in the apparent failure of planning, in the management of career progression, in the remuneration structure, and in the degradation of the profession's public image. I will also not proclaim the elimination of subjects and the extinction of the autonomy and curricular flexibility mechanisms because this would be a severe conceptual and practical step backward.
