Message from António Fonseca (Professor at FEP-UCP)
The Psychology Days 2025 mark the 20th anniversary of the Psychology Degree at the Porto Regional Centre of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa. Anyone who has followed this two-decade journey can easily see that this is not a "Psychology course" like any other. The differentiating character of our Degree - introducing "novelties" for the time such as Tutoring or Community Service - sought to respond to the training needs of psychologists for the 21st century beyond the technical knowledge of psychological science.
When a non-psychologist thinks of psychology, they think that psychology is intended to help people who suffer, for example, from an emotional disorder, marital and family problems or any dependency. In training psychologists - and we have been doing so every day for 20 years - we certainly have to respond to these expectations. But not only. About 120 years after its birth, psychology has diversified and produced research and applications based on almost all domains of human functioning: from health care to education, from family life to prisons, from marketing to law, from sport to migration.
Here, at the Faculty of Education and Psychology of the UCP, while celebrating the 20th anniversary of our Degree, we are attentive to the inevitable evolution of psychological science and practice, and we will continue to do everything to continue to offer a differentiated Degree, attentive to the world beyond the campus and to the human needs that constitute, after all, the main reason for being of this profession: psychologist!
