Bárbara Monteiro, a graduate of the Faculty of Education and Psychology of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa (FEP-UCP), has just launched the children's book “A Sombra do Querer” (The Shadow of Wanting). The book addresses the issue of young people's mental health in an accessible and sensitive way, inviting young readers to embark on a journey of self-awareness and emotional well-being.
The idea of writing a book about children's mental health came about during Bárbara's volunteering experience in Brazil. Working with children, the former FEP-UCP student realised the need to approach the subject in a playful and educational way.
“Living with children from a different culture and observing them in their daily lives made me realise that I could approach this issue in a simple way. That's how Joaquim, the main character, and the story were born”, she says.
“Asking for help is a sign of courage”
Through the character of Joaquim, the book emphasises the importance of knowing how to ask for help. According to the author, “asking for help is a sign of courage, as it represents the ability to recognise the need for support before emotional problems get worse”.
By tackling issues such as sadness, depression and the need to ask for help, the book gives children the tools to develop their socio-emotional skills and cope with life's adversities.
“This gripping story of suspense and love takes us on an adventure full of challenges, where courage proves to be the greatest asset”, she says. The FEP-UCP alumni hopes the book will help demystify children's mental health and encourage them to seek professional help whenever necessary.
Bárbara Monteiro's inspiring journey
Bárbara Monteiro completed her Master’s in Education Psychology and Human Development at the FEP-UCP. She currently works at the Social Centre of the Parish of Nossa Senhora d'Ajuda, in Bairro da Pasteleira, Porto, where she manages the Proinfância programme. This is a Banco La Caixa project that aims to break the cycle of poverty passed from parents to children, and to give young people opportunities for the future by providing services and goods such as educational support, non-formal education and leisure.
The launch of the book “A Sombra do Querer” is an important milestone in Bárbara Monteiro's career and an inspiring example for all FEP-UCP students. The book will be available in bookshops and on the publisher's online platform “Metamorfose”.
